Two ECU football players participate in the 2019 Purple-Gold spring scrimmage game.

The East Carolina University football team’s annual Purple-Gold spring scrimmage game, which was scheduled for April 17, has been canceled “due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” according to a press release from ECU Athletics.

Director of Athletics Jon Gilbert said in the April 6 press release the athletic department’s goal is to be cautious and make sure the football team can complete its 10 remaining spring practices.

"We are looking forward to welcoming our fans back for a Meet the Pirates event in August followed by the home opener against South Carolina on Sept. 11,” Gilbert said in the release.

The announcement comes after football activities were paused on March 30 after a cluster of 14 COVID-19 cases was identified within the program. According to an email from Tom McClellan, the assistant athletics director/media relations for ECU, the football team got approval to resume spring workouts effective April 6.

With the cancelation of the Purple-Gold game, ECU’s next game action will be its season opener against Appalachian State University, a neutral site clash in Charlotte, North Carolina on Sept. 2.
