All ECU athletics practice fields and facilities will be closed until further notice due to an increase in positive COVID-19 results among players and staff.

As testing for COVID-19 continues and cases increase, East Carolina University has temporarily paused all athletics activities, according to an email release from Assistant Athletics Director/Media Relations Tom McClellan.

Beginning July 15, ECU will suspend athletics activities and close practice fields and facilities, according to the release.

Director of Athletics Jon Gilbert said in the release that decisions were made with help from medical staff.

"The health and safety of our student-athletes is our top priority and today’s decision comes in consultation with our medical staff," Gilbert said in the release. "We have performed 452 COVID-19 tests with student-athletes, coaches and staff. Twenty-seven positive tests have been confirmed and five of the 27 have recovered."

The release also states that individuals who test positive for COVID-19 will self isolate and be monitored by ECU Athletics medical staff.

In a previous release, Gilbert said that ECU had performed 270 tests and only 15 positive results came back.
