The No. 9 East Carolina University baseball team (26-5, 8-0 American Athletic Conference) was set to play its first away AAC series against the University of Houston (13-18, 1-7 AAC) from April 16 through April 18, but the series was postponed indefinitely on April 15 due to COVID-19 issues within the Cougars’ program, according to a press release from ECU Athletics.
At this time, no decision has been made in regards to a new date for the series, according to the press release.
The Pirates have won their last nine games in a row, currently sit at the top of the AAC standings and are ranked as the No. 9 team in the country, according to the NCAA rankings. Meanwhile, Houston has lost its last seven straight games after beating Wichita State University (19-9, 7-1 AAC) in its first conference game and currently sits as the No. 7 team in the conference which is second to last place in the AAC.
The Cougars have been led by junior first baseman Ryan Hernandez offensively so far in the 2021 season. Hernandez leads the team in hits with 34 and is second in home runs with seven, second in runs batted in with 19 and leads the team in batting average with a .324.
Sophomore outfielder Brandon Uhse is second on the team in hits with 32. Uhse has a team high 119 at-bats and is also tied for third on the team in runs with 18, leads the team in doubles and is second on the team in batting average with a .269.
Junior outfielder Steven Rivas is the third and final player to reach the 30 hit mark for Houston. Rivas’ 30 hits are third on the team and his 113 at-bats are the second most for the Cougars. Rivas leads the team in home runs with nine and his 25 RBIs are also a team high. His seven doubles are the second most on the team and his .265 batting average is third.
ECU has been led by sophomore infielder Connor Norby. Norby leads ECU in multiple statistical categories. Norby leads the team in at-bats with 129, hits with 57, doubles with eight, runs with 31 and batting average with .442. Norby is also second on the team in both home runs with nine and RBIs with 31.
Sophomore infielder Thomas Francisco is second for the Pirates with 127 at-bats and in hits with 47. His 31 runs are tied for first while his .370 batting average is also second highest on the team.
Junior catcher Seth Caddell is the final Pirate to reach the 30 hits mark with 33 so far on the season. In his 109 at-bats, he has amassed 25 runs which is the third most on the team, six doubles which is third most on the team, a team high 10 home runs and a team high 34 RBIs. His .303 batting average is also third highest for ECU.
After the postponement, the Pirates will return to action against the University of Central Florida (14-18, 4-4 AAC) from April 23 through April 25 at home in Clark-Leclair Stadium. The series will not be available to stream.
