East Carolina University’s football season opener on Sept. 26 against the University of Central Florida will not be open to public attendance, according to a press release from ecupirates.com.
This move comes in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and was announced by ECU’s Director of Athletics Jon Gilbert on Wednesday.
“This is disappointing news to deliver to Pirate Nation,” Gilbert said in the press release. “Currently, it is in the best interest to proceed without fans for our first home game after consulting with local and state health officials. We are optimistic we will be able to host fans in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium during the 2020 season at the appropriate time.”
The release also said the ECU athletic department will only admit essential game management personnel, broadcast personnel and a limited number of media members into the contest.
