The East Carolina University women’s basketball team (6-11, 4-8 American Athletic Conference) was set to have an AAC road contest with the University of Houston Cougars (12-5, 9-4 AAC) on Feb. 17., however, due to inclement weather in the Houston area and its effect on ECU’s travel plans, the game has been postponed with no new date announced.
The Pirates recently suffered a 58-57 loss against the Temple University Owls (5-8, 4-8 AAC) on Feb. 13 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In that game, senior guard Lashonda Monk had 10 points, eight rebounds and three steals for ECU.
In the matchup history between ECU and Houston, it is the Cougars who hold an advantage as they are 12-9. In the last contest between the Pirates and Cougars, Houston was able to secure a 66-58 victory on Jan. 16 in Greenville, North Carolina, by a score of 66-58. Sophomore guard Britney Onyeje led the way for the Cougars in the match with 15 points scored in addition to two rebounds and two steals.
Houston, who currently sits at No. 4 in the AAC ranks, scores 66.8 points per game while they hold their opponents to 63.5 points per contest on average. In addition, the Cougars shoot 38.6% from the field as a team.
Houston grabs 40.4 rebounds per game and they have had 200 assists through 16 games this season. On defense, the Cougars protect the glass as they block 3.9 shots per game.
The Pirates have two players who score double figures in points per game in senior guard and preseason All-AAC selection Lashonda Monk in addition to Thompson, who combine to score 25.6 points per game on average.
In addition, graduate student guard Sierra DaCosta and junior forward Maddie Moore have been able to provide a spark on offense for ECU as the two players both average 9.1 points per game.
Houston is currently on a four-game win streak and they have been led by Onyeje, who scores 10.8 points per game on average. Onyeje also shoots 31.0% from the three point line and she grabs 3.5 rebounds per game.
Sophomore guard Miya Crump is second in points for Houston as she averages 9.1 points per game and she shoots 35.8% from the field as of late.
The Pirates are ranked No. 6 in the AAC. Thus far, ECU has scored 58.1 points per game and the Pirates have shot 35.3% from the field as a team. On the perimeter, the Pirates average five made threes a game.
ECU grabs 34.2 rebounds per game and they have been efficient on the defensive end. The Pirates force their opponents to turn the ball over 20.8 times per game and 10.5 of those are steals on average.
As a result of the postponement, ECU will now come back to Greenville for a contest with the Wichita State University Shockers (4-9, 1-7 AAC) on Feb. 20 in Williams Arena. The game is set to tip off at 1 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
