As both former linebacker Wistar Allen and former offensive lineman John Edwards are arrested for assault charges, they are released from the East Carolina football team (3-3-0, 1-1-0 American Athletic Conference) as of Oct. 18.
Over the weekend of Oct. 15 through Oct. 17, Wistar Allen and Edwards were arrested because of an assault at Grumpy's Bar, located at 111 E. 5th Street. Both the victim and an independent witness reported that he was repeatedly punched and thrown to the ground by the two suspects, according to Greenville Police Department Public Information Officer Kristen Hunter.
It was reported that the suspects began to target the victim after the victim opened a bathroom stall door and accidentally hit one of them with it. Both Allen and Edwards were charged with simple assault.
As of Oct. 18, both players were released from the football team, according to Assistant Athletic Director Tom McClellan, who also serves as the team's media relations director. Due to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Acts (FERPA) rules, McClellan said he cannot provide any further information on the situation.
