East Carolina University Athletics announced today the football series between ECU and Old Dominion University (ODU) has been renewed for six more games. The Pirates and Monarchs have agreed to a six-game home-and-home series that will begin in the 2022 season and end the 2031 season.

The two squads are certainly familiar with one another as they have crossed paths three times since 2013 with the Pirates the victor in all three matchups. The first in 2013 was a high scoring affair in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium that saw former Pirate quarterback Shane Carden throw for a then-school-record 447 passing yards on 46-54 attempts. Carden finished with five touchdowns to give the Pirates a 52-38 win over the Monarchs.

The next time ODU came to Greenville, North Carolina in the 2018 season, the Pirate coaching staff had changed quite a bit. By then, the ECU football team had parted ways with former head coach Ruffin McNeill and was under the direction of third year head coach Scottie Montgomery.

Montgomery was able to chalk up another victory for the Pirates, but this one much closer as kicker Jake Verity was called upon to deliver a game-winning 38 yard field goal to send the Pirates past the Monarchs 37-35.

The final and most recent matchup between the two programs came just last season in 2019 when ECU made the 120 mile trip to ODU in Norfolk, Virginia. Again, the Monarchs were introduced to a new coaching regime as the 2019 season was current head coach Mike Houston’s first season with the Pirates.

Last season’s matchup was the third Pirate victory in the series with a final score of 24-21. The Pirate offense struggled against then defensive coordinator for the Monarchs, David Blackwell. Blackwell had been on the ECU sideline as defensive coordinator for the Pirates in 2018 and finished the season as the Pirates interim head coach after the firing of Montgomery.

Blackwell’s Monarch defense held the East Carolina offense to just 309 total yards and forced the Pirates to go just 4-16 on third down conversion attempts.

While the Pirates lead the series three games to none, the last two matchups were separated by just five points in total and the first meeting of the series was just a four point game going into the fourth quarter.

The first game of the series will be played Sept. 10, 2022 in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. The next two will be played in ODU’s S.B. Ballard Stadium on Sept. 7, 2024 and Sept. 18, 2027. The final three matchups of the series extension will be played in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, in S.B. Ballard Stadium and lastly in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium again on the following dates: Sept. 15, 2029, Sept. 14, 2030 and Sept. 20, 2031.
