The East Carolina University men’s basketball team will opt out of this year’s Gulf Coast Showcase, which was set to begin for the Pirates with a matchup against Indiana State University on Nov. 25.

The Gulf Coast Showcase is a non-conference tournament for college basketball teams held annually in November. According to a press release from ECU Athletics, the decision was made over concerns involving the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We apologize to the organizers of the Gulf Coast Showcase for the cancellation because they have done a terrific job of setting up medical protocols for the event,” ECU Director of Athletics Jon Gilbert said in the press release. “Obviously it’s disappointing for the members of our basketball program who were looking forward to opening the season, but our top priority is the health and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches and staff.”

The Pirates will now open the 2020-2021 men’s basketball season at home against Radford University on Dec. 5. The tip-off time is yet to be determined.
