East Carolina University News Services released a statement today to update the campus community on the student who passed away on Oct. 19 in a residence hall on campus.

The student who passed away in the residence hall was identified as Joseph Robert Harbolt of Emerald Isle. Harbolt was a junior intended nursing major, according to the released statement.

“At approximately 7 p.m. Harbolt was discovered unresponsive by his roommate in their room in Fleming Residence Hall,” according to the released statement.

The released statement said, according to Harbolt’s family, he passed away from complications related to type 1 diabetes.

The university “continues to offer its support” to Harbolt’s family and friends, the released statement said.

“The ECU Counseling Center is available Monday-Friday for anyone seeking counseling services. Walk-in hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For weekend and after-hours crisis support, please call 252-328-6661 (press 2 if after hours),” according to the released statement.
