A letter outside Doctor’s Hospital of Sarasota and at the information desk alerts people about the coronavirus, also called COVID-19, and influenza Wednesday, March 4, 2020, according to Tribune News Service.

Pitt County released a statement at 2:25 p.m. on Wednesday regarding coronavirus following the announcement made by Senator Thom Tillis on Mar. 3 regarding the virus being in Wake County.

In a statement, Pitt County Public Health Director John Silvernail said the community will face different challenges to its healthcares system but the health department will continue to monitor the spread of the virus.

“New or Novel infections bring many challenges to our community and the healthcare system. First, I want to assure you that Pitt County Health Department is closely monitoring this situation and we are working with other local government officials and local healthcare providers to navigate this event. Second, no one should panic,” Silvernail said in the statement.

While the infection has been known to spread quickly and the amount of severe cases and deaths reported many people will experience mild symptoms or illness from the virus, Silvernail said. However, he said federal authorities are in the process of developing a treatment and prevention for the virus.

Pitt County’s health department will be present to support the community as well as local healthcare providers for the duration of the outbreak he said.
