Our View

East Carolina University’s Purple Pantry recently moved to the Main Campus Student Center. Operating under the Center for Counseling and Student Development, the pantry offers basic essentials to students throughout the year.

According to several officials with the pantry, the organization serves to alleviate some of the most basic stresses with food security for the ECU community.

We, the editorial staff of The East Carolinian, believe the Purple Pantry is not only a service students should seek out, but an institution those who can support it should.

According to AmeriCorps VISTA and ECU alumna Lekisha Pittman, any student may fill out a request form and choose from the wide selection of food and sanitary items, without a fear of the limit or cost. The service this provides for at-risk and low-income students is incredible and no student should be uncomfortable with utilizing it.

The pantry is also supported by donations and volunteers. For those for whom food security is not a great concern, it is important to support and care for our fellow Pirates in their times of need. Whether that is donating a box of canned food and toiletries or spending a few hours volunteering at the pantry, we all must do our part to make the ECU community stronger.

“Students have a lot of different things to deal with on a daily basis and hunger is one that they should not have to deal with,” Pittman said. “Having a Purple Pantry here on campus is increasing access for them to have food and be secure while trying to get an education.”
