Junior offensive lineman Jaison Fournet and junior outside receiver Jonathan Johnson have been awarded scholarships by the ECU football team ahead of the upcoming season.

As multiple outlets have reported on social media, both Fournet and Johnson have been awarded scholarships after beginning their careers as walk-ons to the football team.

Fournet, who wears number 63, earned a sizable chunk of playing time down the stretch in 2018, appearing in the Pirates’ last five games due to multiple injuries of the offensive line. The 292-pound Fournet is likely to begin the 2019 campaign on the bench despite his elevation to scholarship player.

He is slated to back-up senior Branden Pena at center but can, and likely will, play a slew of different positions along the line.

Fournet took to social media following the news, expressing his gratitude to his family, God, coaches and friends. “Today I will remember for the rest of my life. Today I was officially put on full scholarship at ECU,” Fournet wrote on Twitter.

“I have never felt so grateful. I have had the best support system to help me accomplish this. I thank God, my parents, my girlfriend, my coaches and friends. I am truly blessed,” Fournet said.

Johnson, like Fournet, earned his playing time with the Pirates late last season, appearing in the final four games at the receiver position. His lone catch of the campaign, a four yard completion from the Pirates’ third-string quarterback, came against North Carolina State University on Dec. 1, 2018.

The 196-pound Johnson began his collegiate sports career running track, not playing football, as a freshman at Morgan State University before transferring to ECU at the end of the year.

ECU’s fact book lists Johnson as a “deep threat” due to his former track experience and states he will likely start the season as a reserve in the receiving corp.

Johnson also took to Twitter following the announcement of his scholarship, writing “I will never forget this day! God is good.”

With two new scholarship players on the roster, ECU’s football team will open their 2019 schedule on the road against North Carolina State University on Aug. 31. Kickoff is slated for noon.
