The East Carolina University women's lacrosse team is slated to begin its season against the University of Elon at home in Johnson Stadium. The two teams will square off this Saturday morning at 11, kicking off ECU's fall schedule.
The ECU Athletic Department released the full fall schedule in a press release on its website. After the team's first two seasons in program history, ECU is ready to begin its third season with four events in the fall.
"We're excited about the level of competition we will face as this will be our most competitive and intense fall schedule we have played since the program started," head coach Amanda Moore said in a press release.
The following Saturday, they will travel to High Point University and face not only the host, but also Mercer University, Winthrop University and The College of William & Mary.
"The scrimmage against Elon is a great opportunity for us to get the competitive juices flowing at another level against a quality CAA opponent," Moore stated.
On Oct. 12, the Pirates will again be on the road against Wagner College who will host a tournament including ECU as well as Stony Brook College and the University of South Florida.
ECU will scrimmage against the University of Mount Olive on the road for its final match of the fall schedule on Oct. 24.
Last season, ECU had a 2-6 record for games that were on the road, so all the series aside from the home scrimmage could prove difficult for the Pirates.
Still a fairly new program, the Pirates finished with a 5-12 overall record in its second-ever season since the creation of the program. In its first season, the team finished with a 2-15 record.
ECU failed to win any of its five games within the conference last season and while it is not facing any opponents from the American Athletic Conference this fall, it is something to keep in mind once the 2020 schedule is announced.
All players from last season’s team are returning again for this year, along with nine new members for the 2020 season.
Junior attacker Ally Stanton scored 26 goals in 17 games during the 2019 season, and is likely to lead the Pirate offense this season.
On the defensive side, junior goalkeeper Christina White had and average of 14.91 goals allowed, a .419 save percentage and had 166 saves during the season. She will likely be the go-to starting goalkeeper for this season, as well.
Although the dates and start times of the fall games have been posted, the full 2020 schedule has yet to be announced.
