Back in the summer of 2013, all it took Davis Plowman was a simple Twitter direct message to spark a friendship with Worth Gregory, starting East Carolina’s most notorious duo.

“I messaged him,” Plowman said. “I said ‘Do you like to party?’ He said yes and I said ‘Do you want to be roommates?’ and he said, ‘Sounds good’ and it’s been like that ever since.”

Whether it’s the grueling weeks of practice in the hot Greenville sun or playing pool in the locker room, you will hardly see the pair apart. Both Plowman and Gregory jokingly said that everyone on the team is jealous of the close relationship the special teams unit has.

“It’s not like it’s just an on the field thing,” said the place kicker Plowman. “Even guys on our team will say that we’re the closest group of guys on the team because we’re just always together on and off the field. People will always find us together no matter what.”

Despite the serious nature of the approaching season, there is still room for fun among the players — something the special teams players have embraced. Members of the unit hold a “best specialist competition” in which the kickers and punters will learn to long snap, and the long snappers will get their chance to put their kicking skills on display. This is all to determine who is the “best specialist of all-time.”

The special teams unit also has its own time to play its choice of music in the locker room, which just so happens to be when everyone else is not in the locker room.

“There is actually a schedule to who gets to play [music] in the locker rooms at which times, like DBs have Wednesdays,” said Gregory. “We have Sundays, when we don’t even practice. So we try to come in and listen to gospel music as a group.”

Outside of football, Plowman and Gregory have several different hobbies, but the main one is playing golf together. Plowman said he played golf while growing up and continues to play in Greenville because he has such a love for the game. Gregory on the other hand began playing with Plowman, and said he is “terrible.”

“‘Saying you trust someone is a much better statement than saying you love someone,’” said Gregory as he quoted a common Montgomery saying.

The trust the special teams unit holds has managed to take its play to a higher standard.

“When you have that bond off the field, it’s a trust thing,” said Plowman. “You can trust them off the field and hangout with them all the time, you like the guy. Then when you come on the field, you know he’s going to do his job the best he can for you. It just goes hand and hand.”

Both SEC transfers said that the fans can look forward to the pregame warm ups with the special teams. They want the fans to come out during pregame so they can watch all of the special teams’ “sweet” intro videos.

“They can expect a halftime show,” said Plowman. “Us just dropping bombs at halftime…and in the game…and during pregame.”
