Senior Bakri Abushouk finished fourth overall in the American Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships over the weekend to help East Carolina University claim a fourth place finish up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
“Congratulations to our Men’s XC Team. Big step for the program! Moving up three spots in a year,” head coach Josey Weaver said on Twitter.
Abushouk has been the Pirates’ No. 1 runner this season and finished the 8k race in 25:18.7, just 20.1 seconds behind Tulane University’s Emmanuel Rotich, who finished with a time of 24:58.6.
Houston’s Brian Barraza placed second overall with a time of 25:06 and Tulsa’s Benjamin Preisner took third with a time of 25:12.5.
Three Pirates finished in the top-20 as ECU’s second runner, Nick Ciaccia, placed 14th overall and sophomore Dean Abushouk placed 17th overall with times of 26:01.8 and 26:07 respectively.
Abushouk lead the Pirates to a fourth place finish in the AAC with ECU finishing with a team total of 145, three points less than new-AAC foe Wichita State. Tulsa won with 53 points, the University of Connecticut was the runner-up with 63 points and Temple University placed third overall with 70.
