Isaac Fleming tulane game

Junior Isaac Fleming drives to the net against Tulane University earlier this month.

The East Carolina University men’s basketball team (9-14, 3-9 AAC) traveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for a matchup with the Temple University Owls (14-10, 6-6 AAC,) where it fell 90-73 due to too many fouls.

The Pirates entered the game coming off of an upset against the University of Memphis Tigers at home on Saturday. However, the Owls entered on a three-game win streak including an upset against the No. 16 ranked Wichita State University in an overtime thriller.

ECU struggled at the beginning of the game going 1-for-9 from the field and 0-for-7 from deep in the first 4:36 of the ball game. It trailed 15-4 early, but responded with a 14-6 run to bring the score to 21-18. Foul trouble for the Pirates began to take a toll, as Temple went on a 17-8 run to go up 38-26 thanks to the early free throw shooting by the Owls. They went up 38-26 on ECU before the Pirates went on a 9-3 run to end the half to trail 41-35 entering halftime.

Both teams could not shoot the three-point shot well, as each team shot 3-for-14 from the three point line. The difference maker was the number of free throws taken by both teams. The Owls made eight more free throws, going 12-for-14, while the Pirates went 4-for-5 from the line.

The field goal percentage for both teams were above 40 percent as ECU brought its field goal percentage up to 42.4 percent (14-for-33) after the below average start in the beginning.

The Pirates came out on fire in the second half, after falling behind 44-37. They then went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 44-44, forcing a timeout, thanks to Williams’ first three-pointer of the game.

Forward Kentrell Barkley knocked down back-to-back three-point baskets for ECU, but the Owls responded almost every time. The Owls then kept the Pirates scoreless for the next 3:44 of the period. After going down 69-54 with 10:39 left in the game, ECU cut the lead from 15 to eight with a score of 71-63. Temple went back up by double-digits, and finished off the Pirates with the final score being 90-73.

The Pirates shot well throughout the game, as they finished shooting 44.8 percent from the field (30-for-67). The Owls shot 45.6 percent from the field going 31-for-68. The free throw shooting really cost ECU in this game, as it only shot 5-for-8 from the line, while the Owls shot 20-for-26 from the line.

Barkley led the way with 20 points and nine rebounds. Guard Isaac Fleming finished with 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists. After dropping a career-high 30 points against the Tigers, Williams struggled to score, only contributing 13 points in this one.

ECU’s next game will be on the road against the Tulane Green Wave on Valentine’s Day, as the team will look to avenge the 71-69 overtime loss it suffered back on Jan. 31.
